The Synaplex™ Initiative at TBS

Shabbat Like You’ve Never Seen It!

Synaplex™ is a community-building program designed to make Shabbat special. With the support of the STAR Foundation (Synagogue Transformation, and Renewal), the TBS Synaplex committee works continuously to create innovative opportunities for learning and worshipping on Shabbat. Imagine a movie theater Cineplex. When you go to the theater, you can choose from a variety of movies playing at the same time. Well, here at Temple Beth Sholom, we have created a Synagogue-Plex (Synaplex) which allows participants to choose from a variety of break-out sessions that run simultaneously in different parts of the building. The goal is to strengthen Jewish identity and inspire continuity. We want the programming to be relevant and inspirational so that more people will come to synagogue on Shabbat.

What is Synaplex?

Synaplex is:

• a network of more than 200 synagogues in the US and Canada.
• about having choices, making connections, and engaging the community.
• about offering creative and meaningful programming.
• about appealing to various demographic groups.
• a way to market TBS to the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Community.
• about providing a compelling reason to come to synagogue.

What Does Synaplex Look Like?

Synaplex at TBS has four components:

• Eating Together (TBS Shabbat Dinner)
• Learning Together (Break-Out Sessions for Adults/Children)
• Worshipping Together (Traditional and Alternative Services)
• Rejoicing Together (Congregational Oneg & an Earlier Oneg for Families with Young Children)

How Synaplex Comes Together

The Synaplex Committee is continuously planning! They work to:

• create innovative and exciting themes.
• engage a diversity of break-out session leaders.
• market the event to TBS members and the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish community.
• make sure the execution of the event goes smoothly.
• evaluate each program so that improvements can be made for future events.

The Effect of Synaplex

A more vibrant synagogue, a greater feeling of community, and more participation and involvement by our members which will support several themes from the TBS Strategic Plan: Warm & Welcoming; Intergenerational Programming; Innovative Alternative Services; and Creating Community.
