Kadima

kadimaKadima is our youth group for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. It is the middle school age affiliate of United Synagogue Youth and The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Kadima is Hebrew for "forward."

Temple Beth Sholom seeks to create an informal setting in which young teens learn about their Jewish heritage through educational, religious and social activities.  Programs take place two to three times per month and activities range from purely social activities like paintball, to social action activities like singing Chanukah songs for the elderly, to religious activities like leading Friday night services or an occasional Havdallah service.

Kadima further explores Judaism and leadership. An elected board assists in creating and running the programs. Kadima goes beyond the "in house" programs by attending sub-regional events such as conventions, as well as, regional programs such as Yom Disney (Disney Day). In addition, there is one special convention at the end of the year for 8th graders who will be entering high school in the fall. This event, called Gesher Convention, is a bridge into the next level of our youth groups, USY. The Kadima group is a great transition into our high school youth group, USY, and a wonderful way to meet other young Jews.

kadimaTemple Beth Sholom offers children in Kadima an opportunity to earn "Scholar Dollars" which can be applied to offset the cost of youth programs. This program is offered to students and their families through the Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood Sarah Green Memorial Fund. Students earn scholar dollars through activities such as tutoring Paver Religious School students, working in the Temple Office, etc. The hours must be logged and students earn $5.00 in scholar dollars for each hour worked.  These scholar dollars can then be redeemed for subsidies (not to exceed the amount of scholar dollars earned) to attend approved youth activities, including conventions, transportation, monthly events, and summer programs.  Please contact the Youth Department at (941) 552-2783 for more information.

There are many ways for your family to become involved with our Youth Department. If you are a parent looking for a volunteer opportunity, consider joining the Temple Beth Sholom Youth Commission. Contact the youth office at (941) 552-2783 to discuss opportunities for your participation.
