USY stands for
United Synagogue Youth and it is the youth group associated with
the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. In our region, the
organization is open to high school students. USY is divided into
three levels: the chapter, the region and International USY. Our
chapter is called SRQUSY (Sir-Q-Z) and is affiliated with Temple
Beth Sholom. We open our membership to anyone Jewish. We meet 3-4x
per month, meeting for all types of programming and this year we
have two advisors, myself and Debra Giura. We have a teen board
comprised of our President, Nathan Brodsky; Religious Education
VP, Lauren Silva; Social Action VP, Olivia Beychok-Boyer; Israeli
Affairs VP, Hannah Tishman; Communications VP, Alec Mishkin; and
Danielle Mitchel as Membership/Kadima VP. Our kids plan the activities
with our guidance.
SRQUSY participates
in 2 conventions within our region and the International Convention
every year. There is a great day annually called, Yom (day) Disney,
open to Kadima and USY where all the youth from across our region
join together for the day in one of the designated parks where they
can meet up with their out of town friends.
This year Sarasota
is proud to be hosting the Fall Sub-Regional Convention with our
home town Sub-Regional president, Marisa Briefman at the helm. Please
note that we need quite a few good houses! We will need housing
for 200 high school kids from Friday night throught Sunday morning
October 26-28, 2007. Please see the attached form and send it in
as soon as possible. It will require dropping off and picking up
at the Temple and one late night pick up on Saturday night. You
would need to provide breakfast and snacks, but otherwise all other
meals and their activities are at Temple Beth Sholom.
Temple Beth
Sholom is participating in a community effort to unite the Jewish
youth from all the synagogues as well as the unaffiliated. I am
co-chair with Andrea Eiffert of Temple Sinai, of the Community Unity
group Kol Echad (one voice). We are planning two big events this
year for high school students, a Speed Dating Event in December
and a Matzah Ball (a dance) in the spring. Anyone interested in
helping out with this endeavor, please let me know.
Members
can contribute donations to our Shul in memory or in honor of someone.
Please consider supporting our youth when making your generous donations
to the synagogue. Scholarships are available for those students
interested in participating in programs but have financial concerns.
You may contact me at the youth department 552-2783 regarding scholarships.
My email for
youth activities is usysarasota@yahoo.com.
I look forward to working with your kids!
Sincerely,
Annette Kirshner
Your Youth Director
