With
the steady and substantial progress of the city, downtown
Sarasota, once the heart and soul of the community, was feeling
the effects of new major housing developments in the 1950's.
It was a time of renewal and change.
Martin
and Millie Paver moved to Sarasota and were soon followed
by their sons Paul and Stanley. Together, they began a construction
company and built Paver Park, the first residential development
constructed in Sarasota. The Pavers were building pioneers
and played an active role in the growth of Temple Beth Sholom.
Paul and Doris Paver were the first couple to be married in
the newly renovated Sixth Street synagogue in 1953.
Another
family dedicated to the importance of attending and maintaining
the synagogue, not only for themselves but for their children,
were the Rosins who came here from Arcadia, Desoto County.
Aurel became Vice-President of the Synagogue from 1952 - 1953
and Elsie brought her four sons, Robert, Simon, Michael and
Alexander, to services. Elsie is also remembered for her devotion
to the Temple during the years that followed.
By 1958,
many Temple Beth Sholom families had already relocated to
the |
south side of town. With Hana Hinden at the helm, the Hebrew
School met during the week and on Sunday. Looking forward
to the future growth of the school and the Temple, a land
acquisition committee was formed consisting of Sam Idelson,
President, and Sidney Adler, Ed Kalin, Richard Morton and
Martin Paver. This committee negotiated the purchase of a
7 1/2 acre site on Tuttle Avenue, bordering Bahia Vista Street,
for $35,000. Martin Paver, Chairman of the Building Committee,
with the assistance of his sons, offered their expertise to
supervise this project. They modified the master plan by building
the much needed classroom first, leaving the construction
of the main sanctuary to be built later.
The congregants
of Temple Beth Sholom would soon be given the opportunity
to experience the joy of having a new beginning in a new location,
1050 South Tuttle Avenue.
