Weekly
Torah Portion
B'HAR
B’ HAR contains a unique collection of laws and commandments which govern the permanent rights of landowners and the legalities of the sale and mortgaging of land. There are laws regarding indebtedness and indenture as well as the principle of the Sabbatical year, the year in which the land of Israel is to lie fallow. The Torah then describes the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year which marks the time when families who were evicted from their homes are permitted to return. Throughout this entire discussion of practical laws concerning real estate, property and land, there is the ongoing premise that the land, above all, belongs to God.
