INTRODUCTION
This year TBS
once again is offering a wide variety of Jewish learning opportunities
for adults of all ages, in the weekday mornings, afternoons and
evenings and on Shabbat and Sunday as well.
We strive to
offer compelling classes in Torah and Talmud and other traditional
Jewish texts, but we also stress study and discussion on other topics
that help us understand the meaning and purpose of Jewish tradition
in modern times and the contemporary meaning of faith.
Despite alarming
surveys showing large numbers of Jews marginally connected to their
religion, Jewish communities are flourishing in the United States,
synagogues are showing new signs of energy and vitality, and Jewish
day schools are growing rapidly. Jewish studies programs now thrive
at many synagogues and universities.
Make time to
join us for a few hours each week while we try to add a touch of
the Divine to our daily lives and be part of the never-ending story
of Judaism.
B’Shalom,
Jennifer
Jennifer Singer, Chairperson
Adult Education Committee
The Gerer Rebbe brought one of the younger students
close and asked him, “Have you learned any Torah”?
“Just a little” answered the boy…
The Rebbe nodded warmly. “That is all any of us have ever
learned.”
Rabbi Isaac Meyer of Ger, The Gerer Rebbe

THURSDAYS
TALMUD
101. Talmud for Beginners.
Thursdays, 1:00-2:30
PM, January 18, 25, February 01, 08
Martin Cohn
This class is
for beginners who are eager to learn some Talmud in translation;
no Hebrew or previous Talmud study is required.
Why does Talmud
seem so forbidding to some beginners? Because the sages wanted you
to study it only with a teacher and made it almost impossible to
learn it alone. Delve into the wisdom and logical processes of the
Talmud and the system of Jewish civil law with Marty Cohn and a
group of new learners like yourself. This course will serve as a
gateway to the Talmud and Talmudic thought.
SHALOM
HASHEM…ANI HOO ASHER… HELLO GOD…IT’S ME
Thursdays, 7:30-8:45
PM, 8 sessions, February 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, April 12.
Reb Ari Shapiro
Rebbe Nachman
of Bratzalav taught that the old paths don’t continue to work
anymore; the roads have changed and sometimes the old maps no longer
get you there. We are no longer the people our ancestors were. He
would tell his Chasidim: “If you really want to pray, you
have to, at certain times, put the siddur away and you have to speak
to God as one person speaks to another.”
This course
will address: What is prayer, how do we pray, when do we pray, where
do we pray, and to whom do we pray? (continued…)
The class will
study the teachings of Rebbe Nachman, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel,
Rabbi Zalman Schechter-Shalomi, and Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz as well
as excerpts from the Talmud. Reb Ari will emphasize discussion,
comments and opinions by the class participants. The class will
be guided and encouraged in writing their own personal prayers.
