Library

The Idelson Library's Mission is to provide library and information services with books and media of Judaic content for enjoyment, information, education, research and reference.

The Idelson Adult Library is a carefully chosen comprehensive collection of Jewish content books and media. It is housed in the Gloria Goldman Media Center and Library at Temple Beth Sholom.  Our library has advanced accreditation by the Association of Jewish Libraries.

The Idelson library serves Temple Beth Sholom’s members with a large collection of fiction, biography/memoirs and reference materials. Non-fiction sources include American history, art, Bible, cookbooks, family life, genealogy, history, holidays and customs, Holocaust, humor, Israel, life-cycle, literature, music, philosophy/religion, sociology, Talmud, travel, women’s studies, and Yiddish/Hebrew.  The Library also has a growing collection of DVDs and videos.

Hours
The library is open with staff November through May.
Monday - Thursday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
The library is open with staff June through October.
Wednesdays 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Special appointments may also be made with Librarian Sylvia Firschein.

Although the library is closed on Shabbat, books and media can still be circulated using a non-writing method on Friday evening or Saturday morning from a cart outside the Social Hall.

The Library has three very successful programs which are well-attended.

  • Book Review/Discussion:
    Each month, November – March, there is a review and discussion of selected book. Multiple copies are available for check out. However, the month before the review, the circulation time is limited to one week. Light refreshments are provided by the Temple Beth Sholom Men’s Club.

  • Film Matinee Series:
    Each month, November – March, there is an educational film, followed by a speaker familiar with the topic. A light lunch is provided by the Temple Beth Sholom Men’s Club.

  • Interesting Lives:
    In the summer months, our Interesting Lives program takes place. Speakers share their experiences and participants find out about their truly interesting lives. Light refreshments are provided by the Temple Beth Sholom Men's Club.

In addition to all the book collections, the Idelson Library has acquired a Jewish Heritage video collection of over 200 films with Jewish content. It is open to the whole community.
